What's YOUR Water Footprint?

1. Using your water log (and average water use from the days you logged),calculate what your average water use per year might be.

With the water log that I had,I calculated that my average water use per year will be close to 4,500(estimate)per week and 199026.36 liters per year. What I did was use the average number of liters per day and times that by 7 because I use the same amount of water almsot everyday so that was how I got average water use per week. For my average water use per year,I times the average number per week and the numb er of weeks in a year and my answer was 199026.36 liters per year.

2. What is your estimated water footprint as found using the water calculator on www.waterfootprint.org? (Express in both cubic meters per year and liters per year)   Does this surprise you in any way? Why?

The water calculator said that my water footprint per year is 3412 cubic meters and 3,412,000 liters per year. This suprises me because I thought that I would of used like about 1,000,000 liters per year when it goes above 1,000,000 liters per year. That means that I haven't been concious of how much water I have been using. This also suprises me because this didn't include everything else that I use so it must be above the number I got. Some of the things that the calculator didn't include how many times you went to the bathroom(even though it asks what type of toilet you have) and how many times you washed your teeth.

3. Think about your average per year from #1 and your estimated water footprint from #2.  Which one is greater?  Why?  How big an impact does “hidden” water use seem to have on your overall water use?

The estimates water in question #2 is greater because it included the number of liters I used in food and in question #1 it didn't because I didn't know how many liters I used in my food."Hidden Water" has a big impact in the total water use because it gives you a bigger number because you have calculated how much liters of water you have used in other things such as food, indoors, and outdoors and not just only by taking a shower and using a faucet."Hidden Water" is the water that you use but you don't know that you're using that water. For example,"hidden water" could be considered as the water used in the food that you eat.(examples:meat, coffee, corn, fruit etc.)

4. How does your water footprint compare with the average footprint of the USA?  Why do you think this is so?

Since my cubic meters used for water is greater then any of the numbers given and of the US,I think that the reason my number is bigger is because in those countries, some people don't get water the same way that I get it because they don't have the same technology as I have like having a faucet. Some people have to get their water with buckets and I don't so that is the reason why I use more water then them.I have better access to water then them.I think that the reason that both the USA's average water footprint and my water footprint are high because we use a lot of water daily and I think that most of that water is counted as "hidden water" if it was included in the average water footprint"Hidden Water" would be counted as a big part in their water footprint because you can see that a lot of americans eat a lot of food daily(in fast food restaurants)and what they eat has used up a lot of water in the making of the  product.

5.How does the average USA water footprint per person compare with that of other countries around the world?  Why do you think such differences exist?

As I said before,I think part of the reason why the US has a higher number is because we have better technology to be able to consume water.Other countries are developing countries so they don't have the same technology and because they have a hard time getting water such as they have to walk a lot of miles to get water. If they had the same technology and a better way of getting water, then their number would be higher. The technology that we have creates an impact on us because then we take advantage of the way that we can get water very easily and we don't think about how other people can't be as lucky as us which makes us selfish. Also,we have an easier way of cleaning our water because we have the right equipment and technology to be able to filter the water.Other people around the world can't even clean their water properly so they can be able to drink it and use it for themselves.

6. How does your water footprint - and that of every human on earth - play a role in the water cycle?  What positive or negative Biosphere <-> Hydrosphere connections might be created by our individual water footprints?

Our water footprint and of every human in this earth plays a role in the water cycle because if we don't have enough water to evaporate then we wouldn't have a water cycle if one of the concepts, evaporation, condensation and precipitation, wasn't in motion and it wouldn't be considered a cycle anymore. Then the Hydrosphere wouldn't have enough water to provide us and the earth and we would just lack a big amount of water in our lives. We wouldn't have enough water because a lot of people have been using water and wasting it.For example,we aren't conscious of how much water we use and we don't think of the fact that we lose a lot of water, even though we have a faucet that we can easily get water from.
