The positive impacts in NYC's sanitation system that have on the bodies of water surrounding the City are that when the water travels along it, it gets filtered and is passed on to other people so then the water becomes all clean and purified!

Well, after you use the bathroom for your business and you flush the toilet, your poop goes down the toilet and then travels all along the pipe underground leading to a sewage treatment plant nearby or far away (doesn't matter) and then the filter there cleans the water that had been used for your poop and then they send it back to another pipe or the same one so other people could use it, but there can be a possibility that you use it one day again too.
