Blog Entry: Sewage and the City

1.  Describe the evolution of NYC's sewage system.  What were some of the challenges that the city faced in its development of a waste removal system?  What are some challenges that still remain?

Answer: Some of the challenges that NYC had while the waste removal system was developing was that they would have to make sure every time the rain resulted into a run-off and doubled the "dry water flow" into the plant, it would result in making up a mixture of raw sewage and strom water into peoples homes and streets. Some challenges that still remain are that the construction workers would have to make sure that the pipes that are carring the waste and storm water don't leak into the pipes that are carring the clean water to peoples homes. If this happens a lot of people would start to get sick and maybe die.

2.  What positive impacts does the NYC sanitation system have on the bodies of water surrounding the city?  What threats does the sanitation system pose to the surrounding waters?

Answer: The positive impacts that the sanitary system has on the other bodies of water, are that maybe they are cleaning the water so that it would be clean enough for people to go in and have water based activities, but not clean enough for us to drink or bathe with. The threats thats the sanitation system does to the surrounding waters is that if the sanitation building has a bad leak with liquids or gets to full of garbage all of that waste might leak into to that body of water and it will then be contaminated. When that happens people might not be able to go in the water or do water based activities anymore.

3.  In clear steps with many details, describe the life of your poop after you flush.

Answer:After you have done your buiness you are left with nothing inside of the roilet and you're problay wondering where did it all go?Well after you flush your toliet, your waste then goes down a pipe or tube and ends up with all of the wastes from your whole building in one big pipe. This pipe then leads your waste to the sewer and to the street sewer which will then have your waste travling through a COS (Combined Sewer Overflows) so that, that  water will be able to get filtered and clean enough so that it can be  reused later on. A COS also mixes waste water and storm water so that both waters can be cleaned together. They then are both sent to the same treatment plant where it is cleaned. It would not be a problem if the strom water or waste water is not the same amount because they would still go through the process and be cleaned. In a treatment plant that is when the water goes threw a treatment that would kill all of the bacteria and make it clean enough for us to reuse again. It also goes threw hot water so no germms or bacteria are left behind. When all of this is done the water is then sent back to all of the people in NYC so they then caan use the water for whatever they want.(DONT WORRY ITS NOT AS BAD AS IT SEEMS!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
