Sewage and the City

1.  Describe the evolution of NYC's sewage system.  What were some of the challenges that the city faced in its development of a waste removal system?  What are some challenges that still remain?

Some of the challenges that NYC had while the waste removal system was developing was that the people who were constructing the sewers for the waste water had to figure out how large the pipes had to be for the apartments all the way to the water plants where the water was treated after it was used for showers, baths, etc. Some challenges that still remain are that the workers have to be careful that the sewer pipes that have the waste water don't leak because then that water would travel into the pipes that have clean water that is being distributed to the people in NYC so if that happens, then a lot of people would get sick and not have safe water to use.

2.  What positive impacts does the NYC sanitation system have on the bodies of water surrounding the city?  What threats does the sanitation system pose to the surrounding waters?

The positive impacts that the sanitary system has on the other bodies of water, are that those systems help the bodies of water by making them cleaner which helps the water be safe to be around, like to use but not use as in drink and use to cook food, but for swimming and water based activities. It also helps them regain wildlife that was lost because of the bad water that was in the bodies of water and it can help purify the water because clean water has been distributed. The threats thats the sanitation system does to the surrounding waters,is that if something goes wrong in the sanitation system,as in,it gets contaminated VERY badly, then that water can go onto the bodies of water and that water wouldn't be a good use for many animals that are in the water or for people who are traveling in the water or that MIGHT even be using it.

3.  In clear steps with many details, describe the life of your poop after you flush.

After you've done your business, you have left with a clear view in your toilet with no poop and you wonder, where did it go?Well, the poop, after flushing, goes down a pipe, with the rest of the poop of the people living in your apartment building. The pipes' size depends on how many plumbing fixtures are in the building,so there would be a big pipe if there are a lot of apartments in the building. Those pipes carry your waste then it goes down the sewer where it can go into the street sewer and can travel through COS(Combined Sewer Overflows)to help that water be filtered and cleaned properly so we can reuse water. Those COS also mixes waste water and storm water so that both waters can be cleaned and they are both sent to the same treatment plant where it is cleaned. If there isn't enough storm water, there is no problem, the process still continues. If by any chance there is a runoff, then it will send a lot of untreated water into the city and new reservoirs are being built for us to not have the wasted water. In a treatment plant,it will remove all of the waste, the poop and other waste, and then the water will be cleaned after all of the bacteria is removes, for a really hot temperature so bacteria won't be in the water if there is still bacteria. The treatment plants are only taking away the bacteria and all the microorganisms that might be harmful for us to consume and it's only getting rid of the baceria because the sewers have filtered the water. Then that water would be sent to the citizens of NYC (AFTER IT'S BEEN FILTERED AND CLEANED PROPERLY TO USE!) and the process would continue over and over again.
