Hydrosphere <-> Metropolis

In what ways did New York City's location (surrounded by water!) allow it to become a major urban center of the world?  Include in your response the different roles that water played in New York's development throughout history.

Well, because of this advantage of being surrounded by water we as a city became acessible to many countries and other places.  Places like Europe, South America, and Puerto Rico could all reach us by boat which was very easy.  Boats were a large form of transportation.  We also became a large trading area because boats could just stop and we became a large port too.  Boats were driven all up and around the 2 rivers and traded along the way.  Pretty soon after New York City was a huge trading port, many immigrants were here, and the city was rather crowded, you could tell thet being surrounded by water was a big help. It brought many people that had stores, it brought developers, the water brought trade in goods and other material, it also brought money, and better technology.  So, water did not only provide life but it was used in many different ways to provide development to Manhatten.  Over and through out history we used water differently. In the begining it brought Henry Hudson.  Then is gave us transportation for immigrants. After that we transported goods on it, then we expanded, and now weare in water for pleaseure, or work.  We have used water in many differentways to develop and become a large, industrial, main city.
