Croton Dam and Aqueduct

1.      What is an aqueduct? What makes the Croton Aqueduct an aqueduct?

An aqueduct is a man made passage for water that allows water to flow from one place to another in this occasion it's from croton river to New York City. The Croton Aqueduct allows us to have drinkable water instead of dirty water. Stated in class, southern manhattan didn't have clean water but they needed water for many things like drinking and for traveling probably. It's an aqueduct because it's a man made passage for water to travel from place to place.

2.      Why was the Croton Aqueduct built? What need was it constructed to fulfill?

It was built because the people in lower manhattan weren't able to get clean drinkable water in lower manhattan or nearby, it was to dirty for them to drink. The only body of water close to us, clean and drinkable was in the croton river so they  had to build something  strong and sustainable enough to get the water from the river all the way down to lower manhattan. When they finished building it lower manhattan was able to get clean water since the croton aqueduct was succesful to run from the river to here which is about 41 miles.

3.      What is the start and end points (terminus) of the Croton Aqueduct? What is the relationship of both points to the purpose of the aqueduct?

It starts in the croton dam to upper new york from their it went to two reservoirs in manhattan. From their it was tranfered into pipes that went into our homes. Therefore supplying our homes with water.

4.      What stage of development-undeveloped, developing, and developed- does the Croton Aqueduct belong in? Explain why it is part that stage.

The crotn aqueduct goes in the developed stage. It goes in here because New York was finally able to get water. In the undeveloped their was no drinkable water. In developing new yorkers are finally going to plan something that will be able to transfer water which is the croton aqueduct or planned something but it failed. In developed goes the finished croton aqueduct. Developed is when you are able to accomplisyh something in this occasion New York City accomplished to get clean drinking water from the croton river.

5.      Identify some of the features of the Croton Aqueduct. How do they help the aqueduct transport water from start to end points?

The croton aqueduct was constructed by the Italian and Irish.  They were the most group of people that came to new york at that time. Since their were most Italian and Irish groups that it was constructed by them. If it was constructed right now  a different group of people would have build it. The Croton Aqueduct has a vent. This was made so that if their is air trapped inside it would be able to come out. If their was no vent made the pipes would explode thus not giving or supplying new york water.
