Croton Dam and Aqueduct Questions

1.What is an aqueduct? What makes the Croton Aqueduct an aqueduct?

An aqueduct is a channel that helps water travel from one place to another. The circular figure of the aqueduct makes the Croton Aqueduct an aqueduct because aqueducts have a circular figure and it can have bridges to help distribute the water as well.

2.Why was the Croton Aqueduct built? What need was it constructed to fulfill?

The Croton Aqueduct was build to help supply New Yorkers water to drink  and use in everyday life.Since there weren't any water systems,John B.Jervis decided to help in the project of creating this aqueduct that helped NY get water but today it is no longer in use.The only places where New Yorkers could get their water was from wells, springs and other large bodies of water such as rivers, but they all soon became contaminated so they needed new water sources to be able to recieve water back in the old days. Now,since the Croton Aqueduct is no longer in use as much,New Yorkers only get 10% of their water from here and the other 90% from the Catskills/Delaware watersheds.

3.What is the start and end points (terminus) of the Croton Aqueduct? What is the relationship of both points to the purpose of the aqueduct?

The starting point is Westchester,NY and it runs all the way to the center on Manhattan which is about 40 miles away.I think that the relationship is that because both places are really far from each other so since it has to travel from one part of New York to the other, then it can also distribute water to the places that it passes by on the way. This has been a good way of transporting water because while you want to distribute water from one place to another, you are actually distributing water to more then one place.

4.What stage of development-undeveloped, developing, and developed- does the Croton Aqueduct belong in? Explain why it is part that stage.

I think that the Croton Aqueduct belongs in developed because since this man-made structure,it helped New York consume better water then back then when people had to drink beer instead of water because of the shortage of water. Also people were lacking water from wells and rivers and other bodies of water surrounding the city.

5.Identify some of the features of the Croton Aqueduct. How do they help the aqueduct transport water from start to end points?

The Croton Aqueduct has tunnels that are in a circular shape which help transport the water because the water can travel easily in that kind of structure and because aqueducts are purposed to be like that. The Aqueduct also has bridges which helped distribute the water so that also helps the water be transported from one place to the other. Also, since the aqueduct is really long,it helped transport water easily because of the places that were along the way from the starting point to the end point.
